All letters in the English Language have their own sound except G. It also has the j sound, this is called the soft sound.
G is usually soft when it comes in front of e, i and y. The G is hard when it comes in front of a, o and u.

Rule #1

A single vowel in a syllable or in a one-syllable word is usually short.

Example: bat, a is short because it is a single vowel in a one syllable word. In infants, i and a are both short because each is a single vowel in a syllable. But home has two vowels in one syllable.
